These days, for those of us with a strong social conscience and a desire to make the world a better place for all people, and especially for the many of us who are suffering, it’s difficult to avoid feeling discouraged, or even hopeless.
However, we should all keep in mind that the spirit of truth, reform and progressive change is still in the air, despite all the misguided, misleading efforts to kill it.
In fact, believe it or not, the spirit of truth is actually more powerful now, in a spiritual sense, than it was in the 1930s and 1960s, even though that’s not the way it looks now (in 2009). This year it has even seemed as if the spirit of truth might lose once again to the forces of greed and self-interest. After all, they’ve shown they will resort to slander and deception to maintain the status quo and perpetuate the inequitable political-economic system that has made the richest few so much richer at the expense of all the rest of us.
However, in due time, the spirit of truth will expose them and all other proud and militant groups that fight for the power to rule. And, it will turn the tables on all the aggressive and offensive hypocrites who claim to be religious Jews or Christians or Muslims. It will remind them of the universal truths in the scriptures that they have misinterpreted or simply ignored, and they will have to face the truth, at long last.
Ultimately, that is how the spirit of truth will enable the humble, gentle, peaceful majority of us to unite and inherit the earth, no matter what our religion may be, and whether we are religious or not.
See, the spirit of truth enables us to realize that the most important thing is not what we claim our religion is. Any hypocrite can feign religiosity, as so many do these days. So the most important thing now is how we speak and act, how we treat one another, care for one another, and share with one another in the real world.
Now, David’s original songs help to express the spirit of truth. He is a seer, now 68 years old. He wrote the songs between 1978 and 1982, but he did not realize how far ahead of their time they were. In fact, he shelved them in 1984 because he saw his people were being misled and swept away by a lot of flag waving, bible thumping and sword rattling, which he saw as ominous signs of the terrible things to come.
David also saw that the direction America was headed was not only perilous, but absolutely contrary to the intent of the founding fathers of the United States of America.
After all, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, Thomas Paine, John Adams and most other founding fathers (and later even Abraham Lincoln) wanted real freedom of religion, including freedom from religious bigotry, and especially freedom from theocratic imposition. Jefferson spoke for most of them when he said that religious beliefs should be a private matter and there must be a "wall of separation between church and state."
So, David put his guitar away and picked up his "pen" to try to issue warning and remind people of universal truths __ but people were listening to the wrong voices. Many things continued to get worse, not only in America, but in many other countries. Greed, self_interest, corruption, partisan conflict, division, religious bigotry, hypocrisy and theocratic imposition increased. More and more people became divided and pitted against each other by leaders who claimed to be religious and/or patriotic, and so far it seems as if David's written work has been in vain and for nought.
However, David’s first works were his songs. And recently, since the spirit of truth and reform is finally in the air once again, David felt that perhaps his songs might be heard. So, he dusted off his guitar and after nine months of practicing and arranging his songs, between December 2008 and April 2009 David recorded his songs on a portable 4-track tape recorder in his little home, performing all vocal and instrumental parts by himself. And he did so despite his declining health and shortness of breath due to worsening heart failure – literally, a broken heart.
David’s writing and songs are meant to inspire hope in a brighter future, and to counter divisive partisan extremism, religious bigotry, and theocratic imposition. He seeks to further the cause of peace, freedom, unity, justice, and fairness.
